OceanPack AUMS

The environmental monitoring and exploration of the sea, as carried out by science and industry, demand for automatic measurement and supervision of various crucial water parameters. SubCtech presents a potent and cost efficient platform with its OceanPack™ measuring system. It consists of several high-end SubCtech products. It comprises for instance the proved LI-COR® pCO2 analyzer with the data management SubCtech SmartDI® (Smart Data Interface) data logger. This data logger is additionally equipped with various connection types to enable the integration of many other probes or analyzing systems. The simple modular design of the OceanPack™ and its automatic service makes it very economical and universally applicable.

The integrated "auto-calibration" function, for e.g. the pCO2 analyzer and optional automatic cleaning routine, enables the applications without supervision. The OceanPack™ features a very user-friendly handling. The monitoring system and its reliable, enduring activity is suitable for vessels and demanding offshore work under rough environmental conditions. Battery operations - e.g. on buoys or remote measuring stations - are possible, as the power consumption is very low. The optional RS-485 industrial bus allows controlling for example external pumps or valves. It enables at the same time the integration of external measuring equipment, such as meteorological instrumentation (Top-Box™, optionally equipped with additional sensors). The OceanPack™ is inured to system breakdowns, since it works with highly reliable databases and configurations. The data is stored on CompactFlash (CF) cards.

"The instrumentation will greatly enhance the continuous oceanographic measurements made by the Belgica by taking advantage of the significant technological improvements since the design of the existing (salinity, temperature) systems.

It is quite simple: during navigation, sea water is pumped on board through a pipeline from the front of the ship. This water is automatically run through several instruments installed in one of the laboratories of the Belgica. Many parameters can now be measured continuously (salinity, temperature,…) including new important ecosystem parameters such as nitrate, phosphate, silicate, dissolved oxygen, CO2, turbidity, alkalinity and phytoplankton pigments.

In addition, the new equipment allows automatic acquisition and preservation of 16 water samples, rendering Belgica operations significantly more efficient by reducing onboard human resources. Data will be available soon in near real-time via MUMM’s public web site and following quality control, from the Belgian Marine Data Centre"
